1. Okay so I was listening to the C is for Cookie song when it suddenly struck me that C is pronounced as See.

So I thought - See is for.. Kwang Guan? And went roflcopter lollerskatez lmaonade.

2. Anyway, Lim Yuan's talking to me on msn now, and the conversation goes something like this.

yuan. whisk away. says: i took out my braces!
yuan. whisk away. says: ahaha
scherzo. run to the statue with the dictionary says: grats
yuan. whisk away. says: i'll show you my teeth tmr
scherzo. run to the statue with the dictionary says: i can barely contain my excitement
yuan. whisk away. says: me neither!

Lim Yuan's a mystery even Sherlock Holmes can't solve - completely clueless.

3. Bite me!

4. 2. is actually the start of a new e-drama, because we all know everyone loves e-dramas. In this episode, Scherzo tries to start a fight with Lim Yuan. Lets all sit back and watch the drama unfold.

5. Place your bets. $10 bucks says Lim Yuan quits being Math Rep.

6. 6 comes after 5.

7. Let the flaming begin! I'll get the kerosene, you get the lighter.

8. Read my blog, I like attention.

10. There's no 9, because 7 ate 9 :D

I know, that was a feeble attempt at trying to make you all laugh, so I'll end this off with something interesting, so you won't feel as if you've wasted your time reading what I have to write. Umkay?

Keep scrolling.

Almost there!

Something interesting.

Betcha didn't see that coming.

I really hope you all feel the same way too!

Lol, sorry for sounding pissed off or offending lately, was really tired with so many activities and some stuff happening. But when i come to class and see the smiles and happiness in everyone, its a different thing xD

Laleela i'm not making sense!

gaining attention.

(Warning: do not read if you think its a load of crap. do not mod unless you have valid reasons. this is not flaming as well or any forms of personal attack.)

Have you ever wondered why a million pair of eyes is glued on the newest reality show, "America's Sexiest People"? All over the globe, millions of people are giving so much attention to the beautiful blondes clad in little pathetic triangles of cloth and string, sashaying across the screen in an impressive manner. How do these blondes gain such attention? Is it because of the exposure of their flawless skin? Nope, I do not think so. It is probably because these hot girls project a sense of confidence. And this is essentially the crux of my essay. The first critical key to gaining attention is simply to have confidence in yourself. Do not be influenced by others or any comments. Trust yourself. Believe that you have the ability to accomplish any task, despite its complexity or difficulty. Love yourself <3. Appreciate your own merits and make good use of them. This result in an increase in your own confidence level and most probably would get you more attention. With confidence, a mystery force, aka the X-factor, is born. What exactly constitutes the X-factor? What are the effects of X-factor? In layman terms, X-factor is a combination of confidence, self-respect and a sense of control of your own environment which makes an individual very attractive. Individuals with X-factor could make any person turn heads just to catch another glimpse of him. (Example: memoirs of a geisha. chiyo managed to attract the attention of the poor cyclist.)

Apart from mere confidence, one must be respected to gain attention. Golden Rule: To gain respect, you must first respect others. The only deviation that I can think is that you must be an authority in a particular field. If a Harvard economist professor comes to hcjc to lecture, I would certainly give him my 100% attention. However from that exceptional case, we generally need to respect others before others respect you. Respect is not telling people that you are writing a useless long piece of class blog. Respect is not telling people that you are embarrassing the class by wrongfully posting entries. Respect is showing regard and sensitivity for something. Without respect, it would be awfully rare that you gain respect or any forms of attention.

After writing so many words, am I getting your attention?

Interesting entry by [sHan]. Though don't know what she's writing about, but i sense the angst inside her. she's trying to deal with this problem in a very diplomatic and nice way, without flaming anyone over here. (though i seriously doubt the effectiveness of her post since noone understands. hehe)

Just like what i've mentioned in my previous posts and the post by lim-mei, all of you shouldn't be quarreling over such small matters in the first place. Just looking at the constant bickering makes me feel embarrassed.

All of you are nice people, just try to tolerate one another. Everyone has flaws, (except me), so just tolerate until you cannot stand him or her. After which, drag him to 1 side and tell him or her in private that he or she sucks.

I seriously hope all these petty exchanges will stop. All of us are young adults. Peace k. talk about a more pressing topic - we should consider those places suggested by ps and dr for jts. my budget isnt a lot.

If all of you still regard me as laoda, then stop arguing. period. i don't wish to see anymore of this in the future. Should this persist, i'm afraid, the moderators and me will have to do it the hard-handed way...heh heh heh.

why do we do the things we do.

not necessary everything did was done with a reason. but still, we doggedly pursue those elusive answers which we ourselves may not know. struggling, the questioned tries to put the abstract, intangible explanation in words. these very words can shed light on the seemingly mystifying acts, or they can generate more confusion as the puzzle seems to complicate itself, involving more issues than intended. the answer may satisfy the questioner, it can also shock as well. the truth seems unexpected sometimes- it can be blatantly obvious and in your face all the while but you never noticed; it can be painfully simple that you never thought of it as an answer. but a simple answer is never an answer enough. we read into the simple answer as we attach a multitude of agendas and justifications to it.

in the endless search for answers, we question ourselves. we question others. as questions lead to even more questions, the answer seems further away than ever. we go on and on, piloting ourselves away from the original intent. just like how i'm now digressing from the question itself.

i nearly forgot why i asked that.

so, why do we do the things we do.

some people think there's a reason behind everything. i think not. sometimes behaviour mirror our sub-consciousness. thus we cannot really explain it, because the word sub is there for a reason (: as i have always said, ignorance is bliss. so, what's wrong with plain acceptance? insecurities tell us that there is more to it than we think, it's dangerous to just accept without contemplating what it is for. school tells us to think critically. society tells us reading something at face value is superficial and dumb. so we dont. still, i dont think it's necessary to apply it to everything. by saying this, i'm not endorsing shallow interpretation. i'm just saying there's a time for everything. there are times when we need to contemplate and delve deep beneath the surface. other times, we should just live and let go.

most of the time, we dont ask ourselves why we do the things we do.

do we?

ok, i dont.

i'm troubled by the inconviniences of that. laziness doesnt permit me to do so. so i dont. until something major happens. even when i do, naïveity normally reassures me everything is not as bad as it seems, though people around me may think otherwise. really, i dont think it's that bad. my rationale being that a shattered heart is better than none. all's not lost yet. the same goes with other problems. so long the people involved are still feeling, hope still remains. call me an unrealistic optimist all you want (: at least it's better than an unrealistic pessimist. surely i would rather have my head in the clouds than be buried several feet deep under all the grime of my musings. but still, it's never too good to be unrealistic. the unrealistic optimist may fall from the clouds as the truth hits, dying on his way on the long fall down, the pressure causing his lungs to be pierced. the unrealistic pessimist may suffocate. oh my, this is getting morbid.

again, back to the question, why do we do the things we do.

do you regret for not asking yourselves that? regret is another big cause of depression. we lament the things that we could have done but didnt. we mope about what we shouldnt do but did. either way, it's a horrible feeling. in the name of self expression, we sometimes hurt others unwittingly. at that point in time, the most important thing is of course, thy self. human relationships are more delicate than we think they are. a single comment or a small act can tip that fine balance and result in catastrophic consequences. you never know how the other person is going to react to it. you never know what something that small can impact on another person's life. it can end up making a person's day or breaking it. but there is no point in submerging ourselves in regret, like how we wallow ourselves in self pity. well, though i agree that moaning about why we exist is an essential part of our existence, it is not the entirety of it. just indulge in it for a while, and come out of that too-small shell that doesnt really fit who you are.

why do we do the things we do?

why ask that, since none of us can undo what we have done.

i've been trying to read newsweek. 48 hours and 13 pages down. its no small feat ok. it almost killed all my brain cells. anyway, the only thing that really caught my eye and stayed in my brain is the quote above. i wish that everyone could be like this, and everyone thought that everyone else is like that. then people would stop being so judgemental and being so afraid of being judged.
---
it doesn't mean that when you discover a character flaw in someone, you allow that flaw to overwhelm everything else about that person. believe me, i know it's tough to try to NOT ignore that pesky little twit. but sometimes when you force yourself to be nice and give a smile to a person you hate, you'll realise that liking someone is always much easier than hating.
---
and for goodness sake, don't try to hide all your bad points. when you see someone who is so perfect and just plain angelic, you can sense that lack of warmth. that fakeness. that insincerity. whereas, if you are able to show everyone who you really are and people still embrace your goodness AND badness, then you can feel real acceptance. what's the pt of putting on a facade and letting everyone love that mask? then no one will like you cos no one even knows who you are.

DON'T RESTRAIN YOURSELF! sure, some people might hate you, but that's their problem. i gurantee you the friends you make would be REAL GOOD SOLID TRUE friends.

there's a conflict though. i want to be myself, but sometimes you're trying to get rid of your weaknesss as well. like if im selfish, i can't say "oh. that's who i am" and spend the rest of my life being a mean old scrooge. i've gotta change somehow. so i guess just try to change the part you're not happy with, and keep the parts you like about yourself. what's most important is the ability to embrace yourself for who you are.

The Sky Has Fallen!

hehe. still rmb tat time when alice played the intoduction game with us. One of the forfeits was to go over to the other grp and shout "the sky's falling!" fond memories... ... ... ...

ok, lets get to serious business here. i think you guys should seriously get a life. like seriously man. in the first place, all of you were complaining about wanting a class blog. after which, wenjie took the effort to create one. now i see him being lambasted by ppl from all sides, about what deleting posts and all these nonsense. if you have have the slightest morality left in you, you should feel ashamed of yourself

in the 2nd place, you should ask yourself, what the purpose of a class blog is. its for sharing fun things about us, and present our nice side to the rest of the world. imagine if aliens from other worlds come and view this blog. what will they think of us? a bunch of sissies whinning about he bully me this kind of stuff?

in the 3rd place, i'm seriously fed up with all these kind of lengthy, philosophical posts what rant on about whether man is inately evil or good. please! if you want to tell something off, tell him in private, dun flame him in the blog. and dont try to diffuse tensions by posting such lengthy entries. No one knows what you're trying to say. if u truely want ppl to patch things up, arrange a meeting, have a cup of coffee and talk. brothers bear no overnight grudges

in the 4th place. i have not read the blog since the bloody long post by kwang guan about matrix (slaps him with a large, smelly trout) so i don't know what's all the ranting about. like seriously man, if you want to resolve tensions, take the cue from my words above.

maybe we should try to reintroduce ourselves again by playing the game alice played with us. ni men hao, wo de ming zhi jiao....

Ruiyuan is disgusted and bored. No talks to me. And wenjie described me like a volcano (i know i am a geog student), saying that i used to be rasther active over here.. but now i am dormant.

I am ok with cliques. They form because certain people can communicate better only with a certain group of people. But please. don't interrupt lessons. Speak softer. and don't talk so loudly that tutors like ms cheong and ms hong have to fight with your voices. its really irritating. I know communication is impt. But please. The main objective of education is to learn but not to disrupt lessons. Ask mr pang to justify this point. certain people may claim that they don't talk that much. Try and recall your GP lessons. Ms cheong had such a hard time speaking to us. talk less. and if you want to talk, don't laugh so loudly as if your fatehr owned the school(e.g. Domyoji Tsukasa from meteor garden). I remembered people behind me laughing extremely loudly during the test. I am just stating facts.

I missed a lot of entries. and i heard from one of the mods that ps's article was edited. MODERATORS. Read this. Please seek permission from the author or at least have the courtesy to inform the contributor that you will be editing his/her entry. this is basic courtesy. and please. i would appreciate if the mods can update on the edited entry the reason for moderating/editing certain posts.

You certainly won't want me to edit your work after you hand in your work to me. Imagine you hand in your chem prac to me. then i decided to edit your chem prac by cancelling all your calculations and removing all your 3sf without informing you. That is rather bad of me right? Think both sides before you decide what to do.

this is enough for me. So moderators. if you decide to mod my entry. Email me and exaplin to me why you want to edit my article before you do so. I think my nickname is displayed at the bottom of this entry right? so i believe this contributed article belongs to me and i am just sharing it. copyright still exists. =)

If everyone gets a tarot card..

hi all rollers.... dedicated my evening to learn tarot cards... it's been very interesting. (No, this entry isn't created to share my difficultites in learning the meaning of tarot cards. Nor is it to use this as a source to vent my accumultaed frustration.) I just had an intersting question; If i was given the opportunity to be the tarot deck, which card would I give to the 6d rollers (certain people that i really know or can find a card)?

here's my answers and the reasons I present them such a card. please read the warning below, before proceeding.

WARNING: BELOW ARE ALL NORMATIVE SENTENCES. any forms of interpretations are just my own personal opinions and in no way, definitively represent the truth.

wenjie: I would give him the Lovers card. I believe wenjie came to a cross-road, the ending of his 10 yrs of single sex education. In front of him, lies a difficult choice to make. Its like he found a missing part of himself. (sidetrack: just like a pie finally finding the missing piece to make a complete circle. The pie started the journey of finding that last piece. On his journey he found many identical pieces and was accompanied by many beautiful companions such as butterfly. The process wasn't easy but it paid off. =D) But, he doesn't know if its the correct piece. This card tells you to trust your instincts to choose the item you're so drawn to. Go for it!

kwang guan: the hanged man...yep. I would give myself this card. During this few weeks, I found that I understood many things about life. I have sacrificed many things to hear many sides of the truth. From then on, I have never seen the same thing from a narrow angle but from many perspectives.

wensi: death. *touch wood* Your world turns grey and dark. her old world, your old self is dead. In it, rise a new sun which represents a new beginning. The death card represents a transformation as you come to terms with certain things. You may feel sad, empty or low. But this is just the beginning, and soon, a phoenix will rise from the ashes. In the darkness lies a sunrise. In death lies a resurrection.

Peng Sing: Upright/Dignified Moon. Sometimes I think that you think too hard on some occasions and be too swallowed in your thoughts. It takes efforts to understand your thoughts and feelings. Your personal depression could be a result of inability to see things clearly sometimes because you search too hard for the answer. You need some forms of help to escape from daydreams and drift into reality.

laoda: Knight of wands. You are well-liked, energetic, confident but sometimes have a unpredictable nature. You
have an engaging temperament and your actions sometimes are a little too swift to make sense . But with hindsight, it becomes easier to understand.

hylden: King of Pentacles. You are trustworthy, patient, cautious and slow to lose your anger. Though you may project a image that you are difficult to approach, you are actually a friendly, humourous person that tell amusing and funny stuff. You are kind and loyal and never hold back your help, while you expect nothing from your kind gestures. But, you do not want to be beholden to anyone. not quite sure of this, but its the most similar i can think of. XD.

i shall end here. until i can find any apt matches.

Resolution

Hello everyone.

Few things I'd like to make clear.

1. The last sentence in my previous class blog entry (which has been removed) wasn't an attempt of personal attack against Wensi. I would've said that anyway even if someone else was the welfare rep.

2. In now way did I imply that Wensi was incapable, I was implying that the Welfare Rep should take charge. It was her own suspicion working up.

3. @ Moderators: You seriously have no idea whatsoever how to moderate. If you really were so intelligent, you would've deleted Wensi's post as well, and try to resolve the welfare rep issue. But you chose to delete mine. Why? Is the truth really that hard to contend with?

4. There is a difference between nice and sensitive, and, self-centered and easily hurt. People who let themselves get hurt by little things, deserve to get hurt. That's life. The same goes for everyone else. So lern2lyfe.

JTS

Friday, February 24, 2006

Hey all,

Well, if Fish and co. doesn't work out, we can always try Liquid Cafe, its this little eatery (yes, air-conditioned) along Upp Bt Timah Rd, Rail Mall there. The food there is really nice, I brought Samuel and Marc there once to eat, and the feedback was quite positive. Its just a 15 minute bus ride from school, and the prices are reasonable.

If any of you are interested, I don't mind helping to organize/book the entire place down for JTS. They entire restaurant has a seating capacity of 52 (44 inside, 8 outside). So should be big enough. If any of you are interested, just post in the comments or something. And I'll just call them up and see if we can get something going.

Here's a small advert for my blog. Just written something in response to KG's long entry. GO READ :D

MATRIX and YOU

Monday, February 20, 2006

Hi all rollers! its been quite a time since this blog is updated. This entry was intended to be published at my personal blog, but since its dead and that this blog seriously needs some new life, I decided to post it here. *claps claps*

anyway i am going to discuss abt appearance and reality, control and true love in this entry. All this is going to be discussed in the framework of Matrix and its philosophy. (so its better if you have watched that series of movies).

Before I dive straight into my points, allow me to acknowledge a book entitled More Matrix and Philosophy Revolutions and Reloaded Decoded by William Irwin. After reading sections of the book, I was deeply enlightened and was even periodically unplugged from the reality, facing glimspes of truth that has created so much hype in philosophers.

Matrix has been centred around some theories put forth by famous philosophers, like Plato and Descartes. I shall briefly explain them, as best as I can. One of the theory is the famous allegory of the Cave, conceptualised by Plato. In this allegory, there are prisoners chained in a cave where they are unable to move their heads. All they can see is the wall of the cave. Behind them burns a fire. Between the fire and the prisoners there is a parapet, along which puppeteers can walk. The puppeteers, who are behind the prisoners, hold up puppets that cast shadows on the wall of the cave. The prisoners are unable to see these puppets, the real objects, that pass behind them. What the prisoners see and hear are shadows and echoes cast by objects that they do not see. The implications are that the prisoners easily mistake appearance as reality. They perceive the images on the walls as the truth (the real forms) but ironically, they would know nothing of the real causes of such appearance (which is the reality.) Another theory is Descartes's Meditations. There is a particular point where Descartes believe that there is a evil genius deceiving us about the nature of reality, so that for all we know, we are just brains but are wired to imagine and believe that we all have a physical body and lives. In short, all such theories are just pointing to a truth that the world is not exactly what you see..

Therefore how do we exactly differentiate between appearance and reality? On which basis do we judge? As for the case of allegory of The Cave, the prisoners can only find out reality if they are able to free themselves from the chains that bind them and be able to explore the real world. We must be able free ourselves from this world of appearances and leave behind false illusions and step into a new dimension of Pure Forms. ( Plato believed that Pure Forms can only be found in the heavens. All things on Earth are just mimics of the Pure Forms.) This might sound a little too complicated, but I believe that Plato is asking us to free ourselves from just looking at the surface of things but to allow ourselves to think intellectually and discover new wisdom. And it that, lies the key to distinguish appearance and reality. As above " Matrix speaks to [people] experiences in having been deceived by appearance from the real truth," explained Irwin.

I understand that this is a little taxing on your brain cells. you are allowed to take 5 mins of toilet break. =D (5 minutes later...)

Let's continue to point 2: control. What is control? Who can exert control? According to Cambridge dictionary, control is the exercise of power, to order, limit, instruct, rule over another person or thing. In Matrix Reloaded, there was a dialogue that illustrated the exercise of control between Councilor Hamann and Neo.

CH (councilor hamann): have you been to the engineering level? I love to walk there at night, it's quite amazing. Would you like to see it?

Neo: Sure.

CH: Almost no one comes down here, unless, of course, there's a problem. That's how it is with people- nobody cares how it works as long as it works. I like it down here. I like to be reminded of this city survives because of these machines. These machines are keeping us alive, while other machines are coming to kill us. Interesting, isn't it? Power to give life, and the power to end it.

Neo: We have the same power.

CH: I suppose we do, but down here sometimes I think about all those people still plugged in the Matrix and when I look at these machines, I .... I cant help thinking that in a way, we are plugged into them.

Neo: But we control these machines, they don't control us.

CH: Of course not, how could they? The idea is pure nonsense, but .... it does make one wonder just... what is control?

Neo: If we wanted, we could shut these machines down.

CH: Of course.... that's it. You hit it! That's control isn't it? If we wanted, we could smash them into bits. Although if we did, we'd have to consider what would happen to our lights, our hear and our air.

Neo: So we need machines and they need us. Is that your point, Councilor?

CH: No, no point. Old men like me dont bother with making points. There's no point.

This has illustrated the concept of subtle control, where the control is not complete. As in the example, a structure that is being depended upon, exerts a kind of control, which we would probably not even realised that there is such a control over our actions and behavoir. But, can we ever break free from the controls that other beings exert on us? In the matrix, Merovingian has a wrong perception of the control, as being a chain of cause and effects and that we are powerless to stop such universal real truth.

Merovingian: ... soon the why and the reason are gone, and all that matters is the feeling itself. This is the nature of the universe. We struggle against it, We fight to deny it, but it is of course pretence, it is a lie. Beneath our poised appearance, the truth is that we are completely out of control. Casuality. There is no escape from it, we are forever slaves to it. Our only hope is to understand the "why". "why" is what separates you from me...

However, the real truth of control is cast onto a different light. Control can never fully bind us. They can deviate and influences us but we remain free to think and resist that control.

Architect: Please, as I was saying she (oracle) stumbled upon a solution whereby nearly 99% of all test subjects accepted the program as long as they were given a choice, even if they were only aware of the choice at a near unconscious level. While this answered the function, it was obviously fundamentally flawed thus creating the otherwise contradictory systemic anomaly, that if left unchecked might threaten the system itself. Ergo those that refuse the program, while a minority, if unchecked could constitute an escalating probability of disaster.

This illustrates that even in a controlled environment such as the Matrix World, there are still people who could resist the control of the Matrix and make a choice to be unplugged and face the truth. "We can never see past the choices we don't understand," said the Oracle. In this context, it implies that we must be able to understand our decision and only then, can we be able to resist any forms of control. This leads to some disturbing questions: Should you control your own thoughts? Should you control your emotions? In my own opinion, I believe that the choice is up to an individual. If one chooses to be angry/sad, he must be able to understand the rationale behind his emotions/thoughts before feeling in such a way. To be sad because he feels sad is an example of poor self-control. To be sad because he understand why he is sad is therefore a true form of control. (get the point?) Pardon my simplified example. I shall quote Marrcus Aurelius advises, "Reject your sense of injury and the injury itself disappears." to end the discussion of control.

ok. so there's another topic to be covered. go take your 5 mins toilet break. Don't hesitate to vomit if you have the urge to do so.

In Matrix, lies a close example of true love. There is Trinity, who is interested in Neo. As predicted by the Oracle, Trinity would fall in love with 'The One'. As the crew of Nebuchadnezzar began to be influenced by the unusual ability of Neo and are influenced that Neo is indeed 'The One', Trinity was going through an another confirmation test. She wasnt sure that Neo is 'The One' because of his abilities. She was sure that Neo was 'The One' because she likes him. However in another twist in the story, Neo suddenly died after doing battle in the Matrix with Agent Smith. Does this means that there are no results to love and that 'The One' is just a bullshit title? Does this means that the Oracle was talking crap? Trinity remarked that "Oracle told me I would fall in love with The One." Trinity loves Neo. Therefore Neo must be The One. Thanks, to her love, Neo comes to life. (sidetrack: therefore we can conclude that love creates life. lol) In another separate test, Neo had to choose between saving Zion or rescuing his love, Trinity. The Architect puts forward as: " the door to your right leads to the source and the salvation of zion. the door to your left leads back to Matrix and , to her (trinity) and the end of your species." Neo ultimately followed the path of true love, the path of returning to Trinity, to the very end. Even when Trinity died in the end, the spirit of her true love and nature of the path she took lives on in Neo.

That's what I call true love.

Food for thought.... Agent Smith's speech to pick a fight.

Why keep fighting? Is it freedom or truth? perhaps peace, could it be love? Illusions, Mr Anderson, vagaries of perception. Temporary constructs of a feeble human intellect trying desperately to justify an existence that is without meaning or purpose. And all of them as artificial as the Matrix itself. Although only a human mind could invent something as insipid as love.

Tired

Thursday, February 02, 2006

This post is practically useless. So do not read on if you think it's going to waste yout time. Right now, Hylden is blogging from the Fish Tank during the gala 2h break. After having a hearty meal at the Poolside, people just gathered at Fishtank to talk some stuff. I dunno. Hylden feels tired. Very tired. If this kind of "cycle" is going to be part of the new JC life, Hylden thinks he can't handle it. Poolside / Canteen / High sch canteen / Fishtank. Rinse and repeat. Rinse and repeat. Everything seems too predictable.
